چکیده
Policy Aetna considers motor cortex stimulation experimental and investigational for the treatment of the following indications (not an all-inclusive list) because its effectiveness has not been established: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Chronic refractory pain (e.g., central pain syndromes, peripheral neuropathic pain, phantom limb pain, and trigeminal neuropathic pain) Dysphagia Dystonia secondary to a focal basal ganglia lesion Movement disorders Parkinson's disease Post-stroke hemiparesis.

Effects of High-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Motor Functions in Patients with Subcortical Stroke
Background: Motor function impairment occurs in approximately two-thirds of patients with subcortical stroke. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive technique for modulating cortical excitability. Objectives: The present study was designed for assessing the efficacy of high-frequency rTMS (5 Hz) on ipsilesional primary motor cortex in patients with subcortical stro...
متن کاملMEDIAN NERVE STIMULATION PO TENTIATES THE MU SCLE RESPONSES TO TRANS C RANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION
Motor responses evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation OMS) or transcranial electrical stimulation (TCS) can be facilitated by a prior conditioning stimulus to an afferent nerve. Two facilitation periods are described short (SI), when the nerve stimulus is given near 0 to 10 ms after cranial stimulation, and long (LI), when nerve stimulation is given 25-60 ms before the cranial stimula...
متن کاملDoes the Longer Application of Anodal-Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Increase Corticomotor Excitability Further? A Pilot Study
Introduction: Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) of the primary motor cortex (M1) has been shown to be effective in increasing corticomotor excitability. Methods: We investigated whether longer applications of a-tDCS coincide with greater increases in corticomotor excitability compared to shorter application of a-tDCS. Ten right-handed healthy participants received one se...
متن کاملHigh-gamma oscillations in the motor cortex during visuo-motor coordination: A tACS interferential study.
BACKGROUND While the role of beta (∼20Hz), theta (∼5Hz) and alpha (∼10Hz) oscillations in the motor areas have been repeatedly associated with defined properties of motor performance, the investigation of gamma (∼40-90Hz) oscillatory activity is a more recent and still not fully understood component of motor control physiology, despite its potential clinical relevance for motor disorders. OBJ...
متن کاملContact forces evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex in a multi-finger grasp.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a tool of choice to study the functionality of the corticospinal pathway. In this study, we used single-pulse TMS at different intensities and during different levels of grasping force, to stimulate the hand area of the left primary motor cortex (M1). We measured, the TMS-evoked forces, or motor evoked forces (MEFs) in a multi-fingered three-point gras...
